Lapis Lazuli is often called Lapis for short. In fact, the shorthand name “Lapis” is actually used more often to describe this gemstone than the full term “Lapis Lazuli”. Lapis Lazuli is rarely without any of the white Calcite present. Embedded Pyrite crystals within most Lapis Lazuli add to the sparkle and naturalness of this gemstone, and when evenly distributed in small amounts makes it more desirable. A deeper blue color makes this gemstone more valuable, as well as a minimal amount of spotting or streaks of white Calcite.

Lapis Lazuli is a sensitive gemstone, and can be chipped or cracked easily when banged. It is also relatively soft so care should be exercised to prevent it from getting scratched. It is also slightly porous and should be protected from chemicals and cleaning solvents. – adopted from Minerals.net

Lapis lazuli is an expensive material. The highest quality pieces are generally cut into cabochons, beads and carvings rather than being used to produce tumbled gemstones. It used in a variety of jewelry items but is not well suited for ring stones because of its softness and ease of fracture. It is often used to make small carvings or vases. Tumbled lapis or lapis beads are a very popular material for making necklaces. Lazurite has been crushed into a powder and used in paints, pigments and cosmetics. Lapis lazuli has a hardness of between five and six.

Lapis lazuli is a gemstone that is mentioned often in the Bible. This documents its long-standing popularity and value. Many uses of the word sapphire in the Bible are thought to actually be referring to lapis lazuli. – adopted from Geology.com
